If teachers’ salaries are relatively low, why still interested in getting the job?

In jobstreet, there are companies that will ask you to answer a question before they consider your application. I applied as a math teacher in a multi-national company, and the title that you read here is more or less the question that I needed to answer. This is what first came in to my mind…

Teachers will never get the pay that will commensurate their selflessness and dedication to the profession. As for me, it’s not about the money, but on how my effort is being valued. Many people fail to realize that mathematics is not about the numbers–it is about critical thinking, dealing with real-life situations that needs imagination and resourcefulness. Numbers are but instruments as guitars are to composers. When I see my students make such wonderful music, I know I’ve accomplished my goal.

To ask someone why he/she is “still” interested despite the compensation is a good question to people who are searching for a job. I’m a little different. I don’t want a job– I want a profession. By that I mean that I don’t teach just to earn a “living.” I do it to earn a “soul”. And I do it by making others earn theirs. The salary is but a bonus (that I don’t mind taking) to the real reward.

You think they’ll like it? Well that’s what I feel. If they don’t, I’ll just have to find someone who will.

you know maybe you should be the one answering the questions i encounter sa jobstreet…. :P i totally hate the essay parts of those things (i think cause mostly i do it while im in the office and i cant concentrate on it) and they’re so generic..parang gusto kong i-copy+paste nalang yung mga previous essay questions na nasagutan ko na before..pero kudos to you and your award-winning answer :)
